Artist's Comments

Sixth piece out of six for my Digital Arts Portfolio Class.

*** Full View Appreciated ***

Time to complete : 12 hours

Painter IX : Oils (Fine Camel, Fine Feather Oils, Detail Oil Brush, Round Camelhair), Blenders (Soft Blender Stump, Coarse Oily Blender, Oily Blender, Detail Blender, Smudge) and Airbrush (Digital Air Brush).

Photo reference used on the wonderful photograph by Ex-stock [link] and all credit for the masterful reference goes to them.

As always, no cloning, sampling or tracing was used from the photo reference.

Step-by-step for this painting is in my gallery. [link]

I absolutely loved the reference photo's color and wonderful mystery that lay behind the snow, hair and intense gaze.

I hope this painting does that photo reference any amount of justice.

C&C welcome.

I thought that it was a manipulation of the stock photo at first but the step by steps proved me wrong. This truly looks amazing, especially with the textures. It's so well done that I could hardly differentiate it from the real stock pic :D

Thanks :)

If you full view (or download for higher resolution) you can see the brush marks in her lower face as well as other places.

Ah, I didn't see the download button. Looks great.
I suggest you watermark this. You can never be careful enough with art theft.

Amazing, from the thumbnail view it looks just like a photo.

Thanks :) My professor and I both agreed that I was making it to close to photorealism and that it at least needed a painterly feel.

Funny note: This piece was judged in a national college competition and the judge rejected it as digital art, she thought it was simply a photo. (Her artistic style, oddly, was photorealism. But she did think it was a beautiful traditional photo - points to the high quality stock) It wasn't until the art director pointed out to her that I had provided the steps on the back of the piece that she actually figured out it wasn't a photo. The prizes were already awarded by the time she figured out her mistake, oh well. Each judge is different.

The final framed size for this piece was 22 wide by 14.5 high at 720 DPI. (or 15840pix by 10548 pix, almost 500 mb for the file)

Haha, that's both kinda unfortunate and somewhat flattering at the same time, I guess :P

There's definitely a painterly feel though, it's just hard to see from the thumbnail, but looking at the full size, the brushstrokes become more apparent, and I especially love the strokes of her hair :)

I'm a dead ant. No future for me.
